U-Ground Music Center and Music House Syria

Tell us a little about your organization’s mission.
Founded in 2004 by Bashar Haroun in Aleppo, Syria, U-Ground Music Center was never intended to be a profit-based business but rather a hub where musicians could gather, learn, collaborate, and support each other. It was created as a response to the urgent need for a dedicated rehearsal space—a sanctuary where artists could express themselves freely without limitations. Over the years, it grew into a thriving movement, supported by a network of passionate musicians, experienced staff, and friends who shared the same vision. Since its birth, U-Ground became an undeniable pillar of the Syrian music scene. Since 2004, nearly every musician—whether emerging or established—has been part of the U-Ground Movement, leaving their mark on its history. The center was more than just a rehearsal space; it evolved into a full-fledged music school, a recording studio, and a cultural melting pot where artists from different backgrounds came together to shape the future of Syrian music.
Throughout the years, U-Ground has survived war, political suppression, economic hardship, and even the global COVID-19 crisis. Yet, it has
remained steadfast in its purpose. Even today, in 2025, the center faces new challenges. With the deteriorating security situation in Latakia and the current government showing little to no support for music and arts, U-Ground has been forced to halt operations once again. But true to its nature, it refuses to fade away. On April 5, 2025, the doors of U-Ground will reopen, once again defying the odds, fueled by the unwavering belief that music must endure. As U-Ground continues its fight for survival, it stands as proof that music is more than just sound—it is a force of resilience, a beacon of hope, and a movement that refuses to be silenced.
