On International Jazz Day 2024 documentarian Eugene Marlow, Ph.D., will make available excerpts from his forthcoming feature-length documentary “Jazz in Arabic Culture.” This documentary is an outgrowth of his award-winning, feature-length documentary “Jazz in China.” “Jazz in Arabic Culture” presents interviews with leading jazz musicians, festival producers, and cultural historians together with archival and performance footage. The documentary contexualizes the advent of jazz in Arabic culture against the backdrop of social and political events of the last 100 years. It also provides an understanding of maqam, the Arabic music tradition and how some Arabic musicians and composers are combining maqam with jazz characteristics.
