JAZZ DAY @ The Betsy Hotel Culmination of 11th Annual Overture to Overtown Jazz Festival

04/30 11:00

Miami Beach , FL

In-Person

On April 30th The Betsy is pleased to join with the larger global jazz community for International Jazz Day for performances from 11 AM to 11 PM, starting with jazz solo pianist Pato Romero from 11 AM to 4 PM in the Betsy Lobby Salon. The Melton Mustafa, Jr. Quartet will be presented in partnership with the City of Miami Beach and Ocean Drive Association at 5 PM on the Ocean Drive Promenade between 14th Street and 14th Place, and finishing out the day will be a Latin Jazz program featured Edgar Pantoja with Gabriel Plácido Román from 6 – 11 PM in the Betsy Lobby Salon.

The Betsy’s has presented the Overture to Overtown Festival for 11 years, honoring jazz and the rich legacy between South Florida and the National historic Jazz circuit. Contemporary celebrations, like this one, provide essential teaching moments by shining light on the historic systemic racism that prevented Black performers from being ‘on the beach’ after dark, necessitating a return ‘Over-town’. In its heyday Overtown became known as the “Harlem of the South”, and was home to myriad thriving jazz clubs on ‘Little Broadway’.
