In January 1961, the new president of the Congo, Patrice Lumumba, was assassinated with the complicity of Belgium and the United States, in order to plunder the country’s wealth. Louis Armstrong was on tour in Congo and unknowingly became a cover for the first post-colonial coup d’état in Africa, while other artists like Nina Simone, Duke Ellington, and Dizzy Gillespie questioned their role in their own country, where racial segregation still prevailed. This film is a masterful, multi-voiced narrative, driven by jazz and soul, about how African self-determination was undermined in the 1960s.
