Documentary: “Jazz in Arabic Culture”
04/30
Brooklyn , NY
On April 30, 2026, MEII Enterprises will make available (online via Vimeo) its 2025 feature-length documentary "Jazz in Arabic Culture," a 100-year look at the evolution of jazz in the Arabic region. The documentary includes interviews with cultural historians, jazz festival executive directors, jazz festival and club patrons, musicians, and a host of performance footage. The documentary describes "maqam," the hundreds year old Arabic music tradition that in many instances has fused with jazz. While there are differences between the jazz and maqam traditions, they have "improvisation" in common. The evolution of jazz in the Arabic region is told against the backdrop of turmoil and conflict, internal and external, in some part of the region.
