Miles Davis 100 – Porgy And Bess

In-Person

Miles Ahead unified diverse materials, but a year later Gil Evans transformed Porgy and Bess into a mesmerizing concert work. The 1958 recordings radiate inner tension despite his restrained orchestration. In Summertime, only a seven-note fragment is repeated, creating subtle unease beneath apparent freedom. In I Loves You, Porgy, the almost static accompaniment heightens the tension further. The soloist, Andy Middleton on soprano saxophone, draws us in with haunting intensity, echoing Miles Davis’s vulnerable voice. The album’s synthesis of soloist and ensemble, innovation and tradition, classical and jazz remains a lasting model for the Modern Art Orchestra.
