Components and Application of Musical Improvisation
The author explores the topic of improvisation in four main areas in his trainings, workshops, and master classes. Four fundamental approaches followed when improvising on a jazz standard.
1-Motif Approach: Improvisation developed based on the melody’s own motifs and phrases.
2-Modal Approach: Structure built on the scales and modes (Dorian, Mixolydian, etc.) that make up the tonality.
3-Harmonic Approach: Dialogue established through the chords, arpeggios, tensing notes , and cadences of the piece.
4-Holistic (Original) Approach: Improvisation transforming into a personal and original language by combining all the above techniques with the technical possibilities of the instrument.
